creating my perfect laptop
many years on, i've pieced together a "laptop" that mostly works for me: [picture of it here]
let's see how I've done, as measured by my 2020 desiridata:
- Great speakers3/10. the asus stock speakers aren't great. but these days I use bluetooth earbuds pretty often and have a nice bluetooth/sonos setup at home.
- Good enough display.9/10. the asus display is a really nice IPS panel.
- Great input devices.10/10. the bluetooth/usb trackpoint keyboard is goated.
- At least 16GB of RAM.11/10. 64GB of unified memory.
- Great Linux support. It's really sad, but macOS isn't a morally acceptable Unix anymore.9/10. linux support is great on this hardware, and getting better.
- Open hardware, if possible.0/10. it's not open, even the parts i've designed ;/
- Great upgradability and repairability.3/10. being a bit generous here, as my modular setup means that I can easily swap out the input devices/display/computer.
- Long battery life8/10. no longer so relevant to me, but the asus has great endurance even compared to recent macbooks pro.
- Good outdoor screen visibility5/10. the display gets reasonably bright. the stock glossy coating is atrocious, but improved with a matte screen protector. i can't complain.
- Low-weight2/10. it's heavy in my preferred configuration, but very compact and luggable with the stock keyboard cover setup.
I am very happy with my computing world now :) I read books on a nice touch display and run mostly free software. My input devices are nice and ergonomic, and I don't have to crane my neck quite so much while computing in bed.
